Activities
Our city break this year is to York, founded two thousand years ago by the Roman Legions, and the capital of the North under the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. Just two hours from London by rail, York has a wealth of history to explore, all easy walking distance from our base.
Friday: We will stroll along the riverside to the centre. Evening meal at city pub or hostel.
Saturday: Our 6-mile walk will take in all the historic York old city within the city walls. York has almost its entire medieval walls intact, and the 3-mile circuit can be walked along the ramparts. We will visit on the circuit the many towers and gateways (called bar in York) including Micklegate Bar with its museum. We will visit the Clifford Tower (remains of York Castle), plus Merchant Adventures Hall (original livery mansion from 14th century). York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and has half the remaining medieval stained glass left in Britain. We can explore the many medieval lanes and alleys including the Shambles with its unique shopfronts.
Sunday: We plan a visit to the National Rail Museum (free entry) which contains many famous steam locomotives including the Mallard. Also boat trip along River Ouse with guided tour. Aim to have tiffin at the famous Bettys Tea Rooms, founded in 1919, with its interiors based on luxury liner Queen Mary.
