Activity
Our 7-mile walk takes in Oxfordshire villages, the Thames, and the Oxford Lido, with an option of punting alongside the gleaming spires. From Oxford Station we will begin our walk by passing through delightful meadows to the charming village of North Hinksey. Walk leader will then outline the famous endeavour where John Ruskin (then a professor at Oxford University) coached his students (including Oscar Wilde) to create a new road linking North and South Hinksey. We can assess the accomplishments of the undergraduates on location. There is also a 12th century church in the village (St Lawrence) that is well worth a look. We will then adjourn for lunch at The Fishes inn with its bucolic setting on the banks of the Hinksey Stream. After lunch we will walk along the 'Electric Road' to South Hinksey. Once we have crossed the railway bridge there will be the chance of a swim in the Oxford Lido (formerly Oxford waterworks!). Short cut option as regular buses back to Oxford. Possible to take a bus to the station from there. For real diehards there is the possibility of a punt along the river from Magdalen Bridge Boat House (prudent to book ahead).
Refreshments
Food at The Fishes is excellent. Option to bring packed lunch as several scenic picnic sites on route.
Travel
Direct trains from Paddington and Marylebone to Oxford. Frequent trains back to London. Payable parking near start.
