Activity
This 7-mile linear walk takes in historic quarters of the Eastern London's Docklands, Trinity Buoy Island, DLR and Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. We start at Paul's Bakeries by the Tower of London, with great views of the oldest Royal Palace, before taking the DLR (front seat on the driverless train) to East India Docks. We walk via bridges to arrive at the hidden Trinity Buoy Wharf. This was the manufacturing base for all lighthouse equipment until recent years. There are exhibitions on this history and new art studios on the island. We then arrive at the Royal Victoria Docks which formed part of the much larger eastern docks, built for the new steam ships inspired by Brunel. We will cross over on the high-level transporter bridge, with great views to the City. We pass Millenium Mills, built in the 30's and derelict for decades, location for many crime films as it's perfect for portraying urban dereliction. To the Thames Barrier before final leg to the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. We can take in the art works and redeveloped Georgian manufactories, the largest munition site in the world in the Victorian era. After tiffin there we join the Elizabeth Line to head back west.
