Activity
A 9-mile linear walk through the Oxfordshire Cotswolds visiting several delightful stone villages with mid-route village inn, and ends with a short walk around Oxford. The route starts from the very scenic village of Charlbury with its wonderfully preserved Brunel-designed GWR railway station. We continue via the River Evenlode; its soft, easy hills and fertile countryside inspired Tolkien's Hobbit Shire. We take in part of Akeman Street, the Old Roman Road from Cirencester to St Albans, with big stone slabs from the old road still visible in places. We will also stroll alongside Lord Rotherwick's deer park, Cornbury Park. Villages on route are Finstock, Ramsden and Hailey. Lunch stop at Ramsden Inn before we arrive at the prosperous market town of Witney. This has riverside meadows with fine stone mansions and a lovely church green at the centre lined with inns and tea shops for tiffin. Frequent bus service from there to Oxford. People wishing to go straight back to London can alight at Oxford Station for direct rail service. Also, option to do cultural stroll through the dreaming spires of Oxford before catching a later train to London.
Refreshments
Bakeries at Charlbury for provisions. Pub lunch. Lots of cafes and shops at end.
