Activity
This 7-mile walk from Chesham to Amersham takes in the Chess Valley and the woods around the valley. We first take a tour of the historic Chesham Station (opened 1889) with a fascinating display on the history of the Metropolitan Railway and the nominated charity, the RNIB. There is the original signal box and many preserved benches and signs. We then walk via the Chess Valley Walk through Chesham and by the River Chess a little way before heading off through the woods and meadows. We will aim to stop on route for lunch at a viewpoint. The walk then continues into Old Amersham following the Misbourne River. Amersham Old Town has lots of history and has various coaching inns, including The Saracens Head. We will also seek out the unmarked grave of Ruth Ellis, the last woman in Britain to be hanged. We then climb to the finishing point of Amersham Station via the Amersham Martyrs Monument, which is a monument to some locals who were executed for their religious beliefs, including Chesham resident Thomas Harding.
