Easy 22 mile cycle ride along Regents Canal, Grand Union and Thames riverside from Islington to Greenwich. We start from the City Lock Café in Islington. The Regents Canal on this side of London is far less commercialised than the western section. It is full of historic Victorian factories and wharves being converted into "luxury housing" and artists' studios. There are independent cafes and pubs alongside, including several barges converted into shops and cafes. We pass the towering monument to Alfred Hitchcock on the site of his film studios. Also passing the houses of Joe Orton and David Lean. At Victoria Park we take the Grand Union Canal via Mile End with a detour over the "Green Bridge" and viewpoint. Through Limehouse and another fine Hawksmoor church then into the Isle of Dogs. We follow Route 8 through the redeveloped docklands stopping at Mudchute Farm café. We then cross the Thames via the tunnel to arrive at Greenwich. Our ride will take in the Cutty Sark and the Wren-designed Maritime Museum and Naval College, then climbing to the Royal Observatory for tiffin and great views over the Thames at our final stop. Boris Bike docking station near start for those without bikes. Good towpaths so suitable for all bikes.
Café at start and end. Pubs and cafes throughout route.
Overground line to start and from finish. Highbury and Islington station is a short ride to start point. We will meet at the City Lock Café by Danbury Street Bridge. This is just after the canal exits the tunnel at Islington. New Cross station is next to Greenwich at the end.
