Sun Mar 29th
Free to members, £6 supplement for attendees from Meetup. £7 admission to Sutton House or free with National Trust membership.
We start our 6 mile leisurely walk at the cafe by Orbit in QE Olympic Park. After coffee we will explore the park and views over the river Lea and Hertford Union canal. We will walk along the canal towpath west towards Victoria Park. Here we have the option to visit the boating lake and Pavilion Cafe, a true Victorian gem, and see the pagoda on the lake. Westwards along the canal, our walk takes us through Broadway Market. Then, via the market, we head to London Fields where the 1930s Lido can be visited. Then north-east, passing Hackney Museum and Hackney Picturehouse around the town square. We will climb to the roof top of St Augustine's church tower (superb views over this quarter of London), as today is open day. After visiting Hackney Downs we will end the walk at Sutton House. At nearly 500 years old Sutton House has survived such a long time because it has adapted to and reflected the changing world around it. Once a Tudor country house for a courtier of King Henry VIII, through the centuries Sutton House has been a home to many, several schools, offices and finally an anarcho-punk squat in mid 1980s. Now it belongs to the National Trust, we can view the house and breakers yard with its quirky 1970s caravan and of course a teashop.
Several cafes are to be found along our walk route, including one at the start and one at the end
Multiple lines to Stratford station (6 minutes from start point). Return from Hackney Central station (Overground line).
