New Members Weekend on the Thames

Fri-Mon Jul 31st-Aug 2nd

£51 per person (including supplement) for bed for the 2 nights

We have exclusive hire of YHA Streatley, staying in a Victorian Manor in the Thameside town of Goring and Streatley. The hostel is at the crossroads of the Thames Path and the Ridgeway so is perfect for walks and cycle rides. This trip is aimed at newer members who have not stayed at hostels before. Just one hour by rail from London it is ideal for a first weekend away with the group.

Friday - Early arrivals can take advantage of the late evening daylight to go for an easy walk around Goring taking in the Thames Path and Ridgeway ending at one of the riverside pubs.

Saturday - 10 mile circular walk from hostel. Route will follow Thames Path to Pangbourne for lunch by the river. Option for picnic by riverside plus tea shop and pubs. Pangbourne and Whitchurch are scenic villages on either bank of the Thames at this point. Historic churches and manors to explore. We will then return to hostel via footpaths taking in Berkshire meadows and woodlands. Option to take shortcut by catching train back from Pangbourne. Walk is easy with few climbs on route. Second option for adventurous people - off-road mountain biking over Ridgeway trail. People will need to bring their own bikes (trains carry cycles Friday evening and all day on weekends). We can gather for late drinks in Goring where there are at least 5 gorgeous old pubs with gardens.

Sunday - We plan a smaller route around Streatley through the woods at the back of the hostel, around 3 miles.

Fully self-catering kitchen. Pubs and cafes along routes on all days. Communal tea / coffee and milk will be provided for everyone. No food or drink provided by the hostel due to safety restrictions. Pubs will be open and we will divide into groups of 6 max for evening meal. Take-away Indian and Chinese available, large outdoor garden at hostel for dinner or pub gardens.

Trains to Goring station from London Paddington via Ealing Broadway every half hour. Option to co-ordinate car sharing. Please be aware that arranging lifts is an individual responsibility and lift share is not arranged by event organiser.

Sole use of hostel between 16 people. Maximum two people per dorm. YHA Streatley, Reading Road, Streatley, RG8 9JJ. Option to stay at B&B or inns as several in town.

Booking conditions for HAWOG events

  • If you submit a booking and your request can be met then you are committed to the purchase. If you cancel you will only get a refund if your purchase is paid for by other(s); note that remaining places will be sold first so you might want to sell the place(s) yourself. Any exceptions will be agreed by committee.
  • It is your responsibility to know or check in advance the total price per person or room.
  • If your request can be met then you'll receive an email from the organiser informing you of the total price, how calculated, and you'll be required to pay within 14 days of the date of the email. It's your responsibility to remember to check and respond to that email.
  • All places purchased are for a single bed in a same sex room exclusive to our group, unless agreed otherwise in writing by the organiser or you have booked a stated, available room. The number of beds in a room will vary.

If your request cannot be met then you will be informed of this and what possibilities are available. You may then inform the organiser if you want to be added to a waiting list and/or submit another booking which meets one of the possibilities. A waiting list means you get informed soonest if suitable places or rooms become available, it does not commit you to purchasing them but you will need to confirm, and book, in a short period of time if you want them.

Methods of Payment

Whilst most membership, surcharges and events can be paid for online via our PayPal account, there are a few alternatives for attendees and events where online payment via our PayPal account is not possible:

  • Pay electronically direct to our group bank account.
  • Pay in person at a branch of our group's bank.
  • Get someone else to pay online for you.
  • Ask the organiser of events you need to pay for, if they will accept payment direct to them (and they pay group for you).
  • Occasionally, cash and cheques may be accepted at key events and dates.
  • Cash and cheques may be accepted for a small handling charge.

For all of the above, please ensure the Chair, Treasurer or event organiser knows how you will pay. Please email us for more information.
