London from On High

Sat Feb 22nd

Free to members, £6 supplement for attendees from Meetup; £12 for entry to Tower Bridge and Monument

This 5 mile heritage walk from Westminster to the Tower of London features two towers with top views over London: three palaces and several unique features of the history of London. We start at Parliament Square at the base of the statue of Churchill, from where we can take in Westminster Abbey, the Palace of Westminster and Whitehall. We then walk east passing the Watergate where we can appreciate how far the width of the Thames has been reduced to accommodate the Embankment and Bazlegate's innovation. We can explore the Georgian splendor of Somerset House built around one of the most beautiful courtyards in Europe (free tour if we have time). We then cross over Waterloo Bridge to take in the South Bank with a visit to Gabriel's Wharf where we might be lucky enough to see some sand sculptors at work. After seeing the Globe Theatre we then head over London Bridge to climb to the top of the Monument (built after the great fire of London in 1666). There is a climb of the 331 steps for great views across London. We then rejoin the Thames Path to walk alongside the Tower of London taking in this the oldest Royal Palace in England. The walk ends at the world famous Tower Bridge where our tickets will allow us to discover the Bridge's fascinating history from Victorian times to the present day through films, animations and interactive displays. We will climb the towers and walk along the high-level walkway over the river (glass floor to add to the vertiginous thrill) with stunning views up and down the Thames. Option to finish walk at the Dickens Inn in St Katherine's Dock for refreshments whilst we admire the yachts and the Thameside views. A joint ticket for the Monument and Tower Bridge can be purchased prior to the event, can also buy on the day.

Cafes and shops are to be found along our walk with pub at the end
