Activities
We have exclusive hire at Llangollen Hostel pronounced Clan-Goth-Len. Llangollen is situated on the River Dee in North Wales; the region has been given UNESCO World Heritage Status due to the historic canal system including the spectacular Pontcysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts. Llangollen is full of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants and has its own steam railway, Abbey and Castle.
Friday: We plan a short stroll to the chain bridge which was built in 1817 to transport coal and limestone to the Upper Dee Valley. We can visit the steam railway, then a leisurely stroll around Llangollen Wharf World Heritage Site. Returning to hostel for evening meal.
Saturday: We plan a 10 mile walk with 10 heritage sites along the way. These include: Valle Crucis Abbey, a stunning Cistercian establishment founded in 1200; Plas Newydd, a Neo Gothic fantasy house, the home of the 'ladies of Llangollen'; Llangollen Bridge, listed as one of the seven wonders of Wales; Horseshoe falls, formed by a semi-circular weir designed by Thomas Telford; Llantysilio Church, originally dated from 1180; Dina's Bran Castle, rich in history towering high above Llangollen. In the evening we plan a meal at the Corn Mill.
Sunday: We plan a 5 mile walk around the world heritage area of Chirk Aqueduct, tunnel, and castle. It straddles the borders of Wales and England so you can have one foot in Wales and one in England. The Aqueduct was built by the famous civil engineer Telford; the tunnel was one of the first in the UK to have a towpath. We will use our torches to navigate our way through the tunnel. The railway viaduct runs parallel to Telford's aqueduct forming a unique engineering feature. Walk continues to Chirk Castle, a National Trust property with its beautiful, manicured gardens. In the evening we plan a meal at the Hand Hotel.
Monday: After de-bunking we plan a trip on a canal boat over the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Also, option to take steam railway ride to Cowen and back.
