Activity
For our next coastal walk, we are visiting Folkestone via the Javelin train from St Pancras. The 6 mile walk will take in the coastal path and seafront of this rejuvenated town. Walk will include the many art works and heritage areas described below. Once a very fashionable resort due to the cross channel ferry it went into steep decline with the opening of the channel tunnel (Folkestone closed as a ferry port). To rescue the town the authorities relaunched it via several arts festivals and with massive funding Folkestone has created a vast permanent urban outdoor arts exhibition. Quarters have been pedestrianised and feature new artistic sectors with markets and independent shops. The Leas promenade high above the beach has great views across to France. The centre point is the transformation of the former harbour railway (once derelict) into a celebration of international railway travel. The old harbour is now a food quarter with stalls all the way to the old lighthouse, now itself a cafe bar. Frequent trains back to London so members can depart after walk or stay late and take later train.
