Activities

We have exclusively hired YHA Totland for this weekend. Totland is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. YHA Isle of Wight Totland has the best of both worlds - a seaside village location, but with Newport, the island capital, just a 20 minute drive away. This makes it an ideal spot from which to explore the island. Colwell Bay, the Needles Pleasure Park and Alum Bay are all within walking distance, easily reached for family day out. Take a walk along the downs or the cliff top path, enjoy an ice cream on the pier or take a dip in the sea.

Friday - Martina will be leading a geocaching walk around Totland Bay and up to The Hut for tea. This is a 2 mile round trip.

Saturday - 9:30am start. Jan and Martina will be leading an 8 mile walk from the hostel along the the coastal route from Totland to the lovely town of Brighstone. Brighstone is situated on the South West coast. It is a pretty village with an old church, traditional farmhouses and thatched cottages built from local "clunch" stone. There is great choice of views and panoramas. We will be visiting St. Mary's Church which is more than 800 years old with lovely exposed stonework. We will then visit the local pub for lunch at the end (there is an option of another pub 2/3rds of the way if we are quick). The options then will be to bus back to hostel or Jan will do a round trip for those who wish to extend the walk.

Sunday - 10:00am start. We will take a 4 mile circular walk from the hostel to the famous 'needles' which are a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea. Here there are many attractions apart from the needles. There is a famous chair lift which can take you out over the cliffs for a birds eye view; Alum bay glass factory where you can see pieces being made and take home a few trinkets; boat trips around the lighthouse and needles. And not to mention the views. We will then continue our walk to the Needles battery which is a Victorian coastal defence and secret rocket testing site perched high above the Needles rocks.

Monday - We will need to vacate the hostel by 10:00am and return home via Winchester, a historic town. Opportunity to explore more than 1000 years of history in Europe's longest medieval cathedral. Discover the beautiful illuminated Winchester Bible, 12th century wall paintings, medieval carvings, contemporary art and the awe and wonder of this magnificent building.

Refreshments

The hostel has a fully functional restaurant and self-catering facilities.

Saturday - For the walk you will need to bring some snacks or lunch in case we are delayed on our journey but there is a pub with food at end of 8 mile walk in Bridgestone. Lots of water is a must.

Sunday - The walk will have pubs and cafe on route. Sunday evening meal is for people to book their own. There are lots of options: Co-Op 18 minute walk, fish and chip shop 4 minutes, bar and restaurant waterfront 11 minute walk, Highdown pub 11 minute walk and The Hut 16 minute walk. Jan will arrange for us to all meet up at a pub in the evening.

Travel

As the name implies, the Isle of Wight is an island and has no bridge so all visitors must take a boat, of which there are many, to reach the island. Train (a) via South Western Railway from Waterloo to Southampton and then boat and then bus on the island (very frequent) (b) via South Western Railway from Waterloo to Lymington Pier - ferry across and 20 minute walk or bus to Totland. Car: Drive to Lymington Pier - ferry across and 10 minute drive to hostel.

Accommodation

We have booked YHA Totland exclusively for the weekend. We will allocate the rooms into female and male but we have also some 2 bed rooms available. The accommodation has a fully working self-catering kitchen and a restaurant. There is free wi-fi and parking. It also has a laundry.

Booking conditions for HAWOG events

  • If you submit a booking and your request can be met then you are committed to the purchase. If you cancel you will only get a refund if your purchase is paid for by other(s); note that remaining places will be sold first so you might want to sell the place(s) yourself. Any exceptions will be agreed by committee.
  • It is your responsibility to know or check in advance the total price per person or room.
  • If your request can be met then you'll receive an email from the organiser informing you of the total price, how calculated, and you'll be required to pay within 14 days of the date of the email. It's your responsibility to remember to check and respond to that email.
  • All places purchased are for a single bed in a same sex room exclusive to our group, unless agreed otherwise in writing by the organiser or you have booked a stated, available room. The number of beds in a room will vary.

If your request cannot be met then you will be informed of this and what possibilities are available. You may then inform the organiser if you want to be added to a waiting list and/or submit another booking which meets one of the possibilities. A waiting list means you get informed soonest if suitable places or rooms become available, it does not commit you to purchasing them but you will need to confirm, and book, in a short period of time if you want them.

Methods of Payment

Whilst most membership, surcharges and events can be paid for online via our PayPal account, there are a few alternatives for attendees and events where online payment via our PayPal account is not possible:

  • Pay electronically direct to our group bank account.
  • Pay in person at a branch of our group's bank.
  • Get someone else to pay online for you.
  • Ask the organiser of events you need to pay for, if they will accept payment direct to them (and they pay group for you).
  • Occasionally, cash and cheques may be accepted at key events and dates.
  • Cash and cheques may be accepted for a small handling charge.

For all of the above, please ensure the Chair, Treasurer or event organiser knows how you will pay. Please email us for more information.
