Activity
A 12-mile linear walk including Europe's oldest trackway, the Grand Union Canal, the Ridgeway and the location of the Great Train Robbery. From Tring we join the Ridgeway / Icknield Way, a drover's pathway which predates Roman roads by centuries. Passing through rare chalk grassland and ancient beech woodlands we will enjoy lovely views of the surrounding area, and a gentle ascent to the highest point; Ivinghoe Beacon. Arriving around lunchtime and weather permitting we'll stop briefly for our packed lunch break before descending to Ivinghoe village and a pub with refreshments and conveniences. We can explore the village which partly inspired 'Ivanhoe' by Sir Walter Scott. We then join the Grand Union Canal towpath and follow this north. Option for shortcut after 1 mile, via train from Cheddington Station. We continue on the canal on a pleasant walk for a couple of miles before turning off to Bridego Bridge where the infamous 1960's Mail Train Robbery took place. The post bank holiday booty-filled Mail Train was stopped up line on a false red signal, with the gang moving in to ransack the train. From there we walk to Cheddington for trains back to London.
Refreshments
Option to bring packed lunch. Pub at Ivinghoe.
