We will be staying at YHA Leominster (exclusive hire) for the Early May Bank Holiday. Leominster is surrounded by some of the prettiest chocolate box villages in England which we will visit during our walks. Our walks will take in Offa's Dyke, the great literary centre of Hay-on-Wye and the cathedral city of Hereford. Leominster is a charming medieval town, famous for black and white timber houses, impressive priory and cobbled streets. Our hostel was created as part of a Benedictine monastery and is ideally located in centre of town. Many pubs and restaurants nearby.
Friday: Circular 3 mile walk around the town to explore the quaint lanes and unique shops. There are also numerous gardens and houses around Leominster for those who arrive early.
Saturday: We plan a twelve mile walk along Offa's Dyke, starting at Kington village, along the border between two warring countries, tipping our toes into both Wales and England, with a dragon facing England and a lion facing Wales. Group dinner in Leominster town to be arranged. Plenty of places to refuel.
Sunday: Visit to picturesque Hay-on-Wye, home of the largest UK literary festival. Jan is leading a 5 mile circular walk from the town of Hay-on-Wye. The route leaves the town to follow a pretty path alongside the River Wye, before returning along a stretch of the former mid-Wales railway. There is lots of wildlife to enjoy along the way, chance for a paddle in the River Wye and a great opportunity to explore the narrow streets of the town which are dotted with bookshops, cafes and antique shops. Also option for walk to Hays Bluff for stunning views from the summit on the Black Mountains. Brian is arranging a canoeing trip along the River Wye. Canoe hire centre nearby (details to be sent to everyone booked). Also cycle hire option from Hay.
Monday: Jan is leading a 6 mile circular walk around Breinton, through the National Trust grounds incorporating the revivalist Jacobean building Warham House. We will be stopping in Hereford for pub lunch midway. Brian is leading a historical walk around Hereford including the impressive Norman cathedral, the chained library, and Mappa Mundi Museum. Option for rail travellers to take train to Hereford on route back to London as just one stop from Leominster.
Self-catering at hostel. Pubs and cafes on all walks.
Regular trains from London Paddington to Leominster. Arranging lifts is an individual responsibility and is not arranged by event leader.
