Activity
A 9-mile circular walk through the Oxfordshire Cotswolds visiting several delightful stone villages, with refreshment breaks at viewpoints, village inns and tea gardens. Mid-point is the village of Adlestrop, made famous from the Edward Thomas poem where the train once stopped and "no one went, and no one came". The route starts from Kingham Station, and we continue via the River Evenlode; its soft, easy hills and fertile countryside inspired Tolkien's Hobbit Shire. We take in part of the Oxfordshire Way. The first village is Bledlington, then meadows and rolling hills before the medieval church of St Nicholas at Oddington with its famous wall paintings. Pub stop at the Fox inn before we continue into Adlestrop Park. The House and gardens were used by Jane Austen as the setting for "Mansfield Park". We then reach Adlestop village itself which has retained the GWR station sign and the poem on the original GWR bench. Thomas was another First World War poet who died on active duty in France; his most famous poem was published three weeks after his death. Aim to stop for lunch there at pub or tea shop. Route then turns south via bridleways to the scenic village of Kingham. Another stone church there worth visiting plus outstanding inn on village green. Station is 20 minutes' walk from the village.
