Activities

Camping at a unique campsite in the Suffolk countryside. We will have campfires and barbecue. Alde Gardens has an eclectic range of rustic quirky glamping options as well as tent pitches. All are within the gardens of an 18th century pub restored by the campsite owners. Winding pathways lead through trees and herb gardens to the yurts, bell tents and gypsy caravan. After dark the site is enchantingly lit by solar lights and the dark sky is perfect for stargazing from the campfire. The site has full facilities including new showers, kitchen area, fridge, clay pizza oven, and provides cycles for use (including a tandem).

The Suffolk countryside is a delight for touring by bike. We plan a leisurely 20 mile ride via the lovely villages full of half-timbered thatched cottages in pastel colours. Will also visit the market towns of Saxmundham, and Framlingham with its 12th century castle and many historic buildings. Several of the villages boast the (unique to East Anglia) Norman round tower churches. Also plan stops at village inns and cyclists tea shops on route. Also option for shorter walks from site to visit Saxmundham and Leiston Abbey.

On Sunday, the plan is to go canoeing on the Alde river estuary near Icken. The coastal marshland area is perfect for bird watching as we glide along the river. We can see avocets, curlews and marsh harriers, plus otters and seals basking on mud banks. We stop at Snape Maltings for drinks by the riverside before canoeing back. Other options are to visit the very elegant seaside report of Southwold or the riverside port of Woodbridge with the Sutton Hoo site next door. The Maverick music festival (Americana theme) takes place close to the campsite.
