Activities
We are camping at an enchanting campsite in Epping Forest, located between the town of Loughton and the village of Theydon Bois. We have reserved 10 large pitches beside each other which will fit either one large tent or two smaller ones. Facilities include shower block, toilets, utility room, laundry and shop (limited supplies).
Early arrivals on Friday will pitch up and then Runi will lead short 3 mile walk to Theydon Bois; option of two pubs there and walk back to campsite for campfires and food.
On Saturday Runi and Martina will lead a circular 8 mile walk from Theydon Bois through the historic and famous Epping Forest. A new walk for the group, passing Birch Hall, the Deer Sanctuary, on undulating terrain with vast views. Route through dense woodland with some of the oldest trees in the country and woodland glades. Unspoilt forest passing Ambresbury Banks Fort, built circa 500 BC. Local legend claims this as location of Boudicca's last stand. Picnic lunch in woodland followed by stop on Bell Common at Forest Gate Inn and specialist coffee at Perky Blenders. We then head back across open Essex countryside with great views. Wear suitable footwear, uneven ground due to tree roots.
On Sunday we plan to visit Epping Ongar Railway where heritage steam and diesel trains services run regularly between North Weald, Ongar and Epping Forest. We start at Epping Forest station and go all the way to Ongar which is an award-winning and Grade II listed Great Eastern Railway station, visiting Blake Hall and North Weald on the way. The price is £16 adult and £8 child for a day ticket.
Refreshments
Farm shop on site (limited supply), self-catering facilities. We have spare camping stoves to use. Nearby pubs, plus shops on route of walks. Need to bring food for breakfasts and packed lunch.
