Activities
We will be staying at YHA Cambridge, one of Britain's oldest and best loved hostels. Cambridge, just 50 minutes by fast train from Kings Cross, is full of history with twelve historic colleges, several dating from the 14th century. There are riverside walks and a wealth of history to explore.
Friday: For early arrivals we plan a short stroll around the nearby area with views of some of the colleges.
Saturday: Our 8 mile walk will take in the lovely River Cam path through parks to the scenic village of Grantchester. We can explore the church, mill and museum. Lunch or coffee break at the famous Old Orchard where Brooke, Woolfe, Bertrand Russel and the other Neo-Pagans met to debate and socialise. Our walk continues along the Cam back to the city where we can explore the colleges. We will visit Queens, Corpus Christi and the most impressive of all Kings College with a tour of the chapel. If time we will climb to tower of Great St Mary church for panoramic views over the city.
Sunday: We plan a short walk to the Castle Mound and a tour of the other historic colleges including Trinity with its Great Court and library built by Wren. Option to visit the outstanding collections in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Option to take a guided punt alongside the river with great views of the "Backs" of the colleges which have the most impressive architecture.
