A 10 mile walk from Cassiobury Park to St Albans via Abbots Langley and Hertfordshire villages. After leaving Cassiobury Park we continue along the Grand Union Canal passing the Georgian mansion of The Grove, location for international summits as well as weddings. We leave the canal by the Ovaltine factory, its striking art deco facade now the home of a residential complex since production ended. At Abbots Langley we can see the medieval St Lawrence church, this was the parish of Pope Adrian IV, the only English Pontiff. After the Ovaltine model dairy farm, used in publicity for the beverage, we can see the National Rose Gardens. Our walk ends at the ancient city of St Albans (Verulamium in Roman times) which was one of the largest towns in Roman Britain. Many remains of the city walls and theatre can be seen in the parklands. We can also visit the remains of the Benedictine Abbey around the Cathedral, once a major place of pilgrimage.
